July 2020 - Newsletter

This one’s coming a little late in to July, but summer has been packed so far! Brighter skies are a common highlight of June and July, making for amazing opportunities to play with light: cotton-candy clouds made open skies glow around desert trees in southeastern Oregon; bright daylight sunshine chased shadows in between the deep cracks of alkaline river beds; maybe my favorite part of the month took me to McKenzie Pass for astrophotos of breathtaking Milky Way compositions, where clear skies made for easier exposures of the the galaxy’s hazy grandeur. Astrophotographs are some of my favorites, and ending the month with shots of the rare NEOWISE comet was an incredible opportunity.

Transitioning from spring to summer offers unique challenges to the process of photography, though: the last of the season’s rainfall and increased tourist travel often keep me from getting clean, undisturbed shots. Top it off with restrictions and closures that come with life in COVID, and you start to get an idea for the difficulties of photography in the last days of spring: planning for excursions in to the wild that unsteady weather or crowd appeal might spoil. The silver lining here? It makes the shots you do get that much more special.

This month’s adventures are already being scheduled; mid-to-late summer is a time of blooming for wildflowers in the Pacific Northwest, and that same bright summer light I mentioned earlier has a way of creating magical moments with some of these flowers. You can look forward to my chasing blooms around around the High Cascade area in the weeks to come; the foliage around Three Fingered Jack needs to be seen to be believed.

I’m really happy to be capturing so many incredible shots for the summer, and especially to see how much interest there’s been for prints of these shots. I’ve made it my mission to make the business of fine-art accessible to as many as possible, doing my own printing with fine-art quality tools and materials and cutting out middle-men to save everyone a buck. To celebrate the start of this newsletter, I’m offering readers three prints featuring waves, a favorite subject of mine around this time of year: two from Cape Disappointment and one from Coos Bay. Because I can set my own prices, readers can walk away with all three prints from my “Wave-Therapy Wednesday” social media cycle for $45; save $30 on three professionally-printed photographs for the home, office, or occasion. Use the promo code “WAVE45” during check out for the discount.

I can’t wait to see what next month has in-store for the Pacific Northwest and it’s incredible landscapes. Here’s hoping to have you along for the adventures.
